Although we use it every day, and despite the multiple opinions about its appropriate use and form, we rarely stop to think about the wonder of Language: that innate and complex mechanism that allows us to understand what we see, read and listen to, unconsciously.

An exclusive psychological or cognitive property of humans that distinguishes us from other animals, even relatively smart ones like chimps, elephants or dolphins, because of our ability to use productive and combinatory Language and to express abstract notions within a system that goes beyond mere communication.

A scientific approach to Linguistics and History will remind us that no language acquires importance because of what are assumed to be purely 'internal advantages', but because of the political, economic and technological consequences and effects it has undergone, together with its propagation through arts and sciences which, in turn, will reinforce its prestige.

This is the case of English, which, both in number of speakers as well as in its uses for international communication or other less quantifiable measures, has become one of the most important languages of the world and the largest of the western ones.

Although it may appear to be entering a period of decline as "first language" or native spoken language for demographic reasons, its wide use as "second language" and, what is more important, as lingua franca – common language used among diverse speakers to communicate – is unquestionable.

Not only is the size and mixed character of its vocabulary a cosmopolitan characteristic – Germanic structure, Latin etymology, unusual capacity and flexibility for assimilating linguistic borrowings – but also, its inflectional simplicity as well as the natural – rather than grammatical – treatment of gender, have turn English into an important and worthy asset of knowledge.
